Hump Day Happy Hour: Bourbon Apple Cider

Happy autumn everyone!! Fall officially starts this Friday, September 23rd and it’s time to pull out warm wooly sweaters, lawn rakes, and buy the grocery store out of their pumpkin and butternut squash. This is my favorite time of year: the changing leaves, apple and pumpkin picking, leather boots, the smell of wood smoke from neighborhood chimneys… I could go on for quite a while. Another thing I love about fall: rich, warm whiskey. Add a little apple cider and whiskey to a crisp fall evening and life is practically perfect.

Bourbon Apple Cider

Makes approximately 6 servings

4 cups apple cider
3-4 cinnamon sticks, plus more for serving
About half a small, whole nutmeg
2-3 tsps whole cloves
1 tsps ground ginger
Bourbon, such as Maker’s Mark or Old Grand Dad Bourbon

1)      Pour apple cider into a medium sauce pan. Add cinnamon sticks and whole cloves, grate about 2.5 tsps of fresh nutmeg into the cider, and add ground ginger.

2)      Steep over low heat for at least 30 minutes.

3)      Add one ounce of bourbon to an 8-ounce coffee mug and fill with steeped apple cider. Add a cinnamon stick for stirring.

Now, put on your warmest cardigan or hoodie and head out to your patio or porch. Wrap your hands around the steaming mug and enjoy these beautiful fall evenings.
